About Me

Share

I'm Kevin Villarreal, a father, husband, brother, cybersecurity enthusiast, based in Texas. These days I spend my time helping organizations navigate and implement the Microsoft Security stack, but the road here started long before "Security" was in my job title.

Where it started

Ever since I was a kid, I always wanted to be inside and on the computer. I loved clicking through all the Windows XP control panel settings. I had no idea what half of those settings actually did. I just knew I wanted to find out.

That curiosity sat quietly for years until it found its purpose. My mom's wallet was stolen from a Sam's Club, and suddenly our family was staring down the very real possibility of identity theft. At the time, on cable TV (I know, what a concept) were commercials for services like LifeLock, promising to watch over your Social Security number so you didn't have to. I remember thinking to myself, 'someone builds that. Someone makes sure people don't have to feel this exposed.' And thus began my passion for cybersecurity.

That was the moment cybersecurity stopped being an abstract interest and became a direction.

Where I've been

I earned my Bachelor of Business Administration in Cyber Security from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2019, and for the past 5+ years I've worked as a consultant delivering security solutions through Microsoft Partners, moving from hands-on IT support into deep specialization across the Microsoft Security stack, including Defender, Sentinel, Entra ID, Purview, and Intune.

Today, I'm a Microsoft Security Solutions Architect, where I help organizations design, implement, and mature their security posture using the tools Microsoft puts in front of them. Which, as anyone in this space knows, is a lot of tools (Defender for this, Defender for that, one portal here, one portal there). Making sense of that landscape for the people who have to actually live in it is where I spend most of my energy.

What I care about

My focus is consultative, less "here's a product," more "here's how this fits your organization, your risk, and your team." I like the problems that don't have a clean, pre-packaged answer: the environments with tangled legacy configurations, the teams that need a security strategy explained in plain language, not acronyms.

Outside of work, I'm a husband and father first, the same instinct that got me into this field, wanting to protect the people close to me, is still what drives it.

This blog is where I'll be sharing what I learn along the way — from the technical (Microsoft Security deep dives, tips, lessons from the field) to the practical realities of consulting in this space. Glad you're here.
